A Mountain in the Stream

nytimes.com -- It is now possible to imagine the beginning of the end of a ruinous form of mining called “mountaintop removal.” Local opposition is growing, and the Environmental Protection Agency is tightening rules and threatening to veto one of the largest projects ever proposed.

Enormous harm has already been inflicted on Appalachia’s environment, most acutely in West Virginia. Mountaintop mining involves blasting the tops off mountains to expose subsurface coal seams. The coal is trucked away, but the debris is dumped over the side into the valleys, forests and streams below. As many as 2,000 miles of clear-running streams have been poisoned or buried ..

The dumping is a clear violation of the Clean Water Act. Regulators during the administration of President George W. Bush willfully looked th

considering the health of the people in the region, even as little as somewhat clean water would be helpful.

"Been done for years to keep coal price down for cheaper electricity, and to keep coal jobs."

Not to keep jobs, but to get rid of them. Blowing up mountain tops & mining the open pits takes FEWER workers than traditional mining does. That's why it's cheaper to mine... and have you noticed coal OR electricity rates going DOWN since they started mining this way under Bush?

reading that article sure makes one think the new york times is a nobama newspaper..

i ain't no republican, but it's disgusting how everything is bushie boy II's fault, and nobama is the one wearing the white robe, cleaning up bush's mess..

somehow, this democrat, doesn't believe a word falling outta nobama's mouth..

and btw: this story has been in here before, probably about one week ago..

Well if this passes, there is one old Senator who just went to the promise land that will be rolling over in his grave. For if he really cared about his state, he never would have allowed this to happen.

Anthracite mining companies have had a long record of discharging sulfur water from the mine into streams and polluting the water,, killing the aquatic life and destroying fertile lands. This should not be allowed period. We all know that once this topping commences, it will not take too long for the companies and federal/state inspectors to get "friendly" and things will go down hill from then on. The regulation of this must be tightly controlled.

Finally EPA is doing what it supposed too be doing. Obama, hopefully will bring change as he promised, but we must remember the Bush/Cheney holdovers need to be replaced with civic minded/ethical personnel.

I'm sure this is an overreaction to something much less odious. It's being reported by the NYT. It's not like it's from a reliable source!

People need to understand that change takes time, everyone is quick to criticize but again understand that change takes time, it doesn't happen over night or in 1, 2 or even 4 years.

One would think that, after voting for change, we'd see some. This is just another reminder that nothing has really changed. The Bushian Nightmare lingers on. Maybe if a couple of leaders had possessed the courage to do their jobs and impeach the entire Bush admin, we'd all be in a much better place right now. Pelosi failed to do her job. Reid failed to do his job. Why are these nincompoops still in leadership positions!?

Hope they do come up with proper rules to control this type of mining. For the fed to look awat & let it happen is very sad, and does not say much about our leadership.

we do need the coal, but make the mining companies restore the environment AFTER the mining is completed, and post bond to secure the work BEFORE mining starts.

the companies making all the money doing this only think about the here and now, not the future. Greed seems to rule their lives.
