Airline in oil patch says it no longer needs taxpayer help to fly to ND city

Washington Post -- An airline that for two decades has received federal subsidies to fly to a small North Dakota city says it no longer needs taxpayer help because the oil boom in the area has made the service self-sufficient.

Great Lakes Aviation will stop collecting a $2 million annual subsidy for its flights to Dickinson when the current federal contract expires on Feb. 1, “We will continue to provide service without subsidies,” Taylor-Lee said.

The Cheyenne, Wyo.-based air carrier has notified federal Transportation Department officials that it would not pursue subsidies under the under the Essential Air Service Program, established in 1978 to ensure small communities retain a link to the national air transportation system.

We could really trim the budget by getting rid of counter-productive subsidies.

That is what can happen with a good economy. Are you listening other states that don't allow fracking and drilling?

“Good that the subsidy is gone now but why was it ever there in the first place?”

Your answer is right there in the excerpt; you don’t even have to read the article. The “Essential Air Service Program [was] established in 1978 to ensure small communities retain a link to the national air transportation system.” But most businesses do not need help to provide essential services when an economic boom is going on.
