GM auctions a Corvette for Haiti relief

Forbes -- General Motors Corp. will donate 100 percent of the proceeds from the auction of a limited-edition 2008 Chevrolet Corvette to the American Red Cross for relief efforts in Haiti.

The car will be auctioned this Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction, an annual event in Scottsdale, Ariz.

The limited-edition 2008 Chevrolet Corvette was the last of 427 cars built specifically for North America and the only 2008 Z06 available in Crystal Red Metallic paint. It has a 7-liter V8 engine with 505 horsepower and a Stinger-style stripe on the hood.

Other automakers also are raising and donating money for earthquake-stricken Haiti.

You probably don't get to deduct anything as you received the car in return for your donation.

100% percent of the sale price will go to Haiti because Barrett-Jackson will donate all sales commissions.

Gosheroonie!

Some of would begrudge helping Haiti out of its mess, and for what reason? And some of you are so anti-GM that nothing they could ever do would be OK. Get a life!

end of rant

Good to see so many companies doing something to raise money for Haiti. Just hope there is something left to rebuild before more shocks completely devastate the area.

derKraut -- I don't believe that the limited-edition 2008 Chevrolet Corvette will actually be going to Haiti. It's going to be auctioned off at a Scottsdale, AZ collector car auction. More than likely, the winning bid will come from somewhere else other than Haiti, but I could be wrong. But most likely, it'll be some rich, huge year-end bonus, financial executive ending up with the winning bid. But as long as it's going towards a worthy cause, we shouldn't feel the least bit angered, should we? With all the money that President Obama has spent on frivolous and foolish items, it should be us taxpayers that should be all up in arms!

Sounds like a plublicity stunt to me. Why doesn't GM just donate the money? Oh, that's right, they only have my money. Reminds me of the movie stars that are promoting donations. How big of a check did they write?

I certainly hope they do more and provide long-term development expertise for redevelopment.

Should have raffled it off. Would have made more money and more people would have been able to participate.

I have NOT read of Ford doing anything. Come on you Ford mongers, how much did YOU donate? How much have you GM bashers donated? Nothing, then shut up.

I don't understand all the criticism against this offer. My only regret is that I am not financially able to donate to charity through this method. If this Corvette is going to be taken out of the museum now, I fear when I would have enough money, it will be much more expensive to acquire when it is out in the collectors' market.
