Gas station inspections becoming less frequent
Monday, May 12, 2008
The Montreal Gazette -- Gasoline pumps in Canada are checked for accuracy less often than those in the United States, and there is no law requiring regular inspections after the equipment is installed in a service station.

To protect consumers, annual inspections of gasoline and diesel pumps are required in many U.S. states - Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Iowa among them. Some jurisdictions, such as Missouri, even check twice a year.

But under Canadian law, a pump must be inspected only before it is first used. Measurement Canada, the federal agency responsible for checking accuracy of fuel pumps, conducts periodic inspections and will respond to complaints about a particular retailer, but many pumps go years between checks.

"80 mpg carburetors exist. There is no oil shortage. Oil is not fossil fuel, and there is no scientific formula to prove it."

That's right. And my new neighbor, that moved here from Mars, says his relatives are buying water and having it shipped home.

Should be reporting on how the whole oil sands recovery is about to come to a halt due to the cost of the natural gas needed to crack the oil sands.

Almost everyone of these post assumes that the inaccuracy is in the station owners favor. Maybe, and statistically, the degree of error, if their is any could be in your favor. It's a 50/50 thing, but everybody believes their is a big conspiracy!! Sometimes I am amazed at the lack of .........

I think they should be checked a lot more often everywhere. A Gas station only has to "adjust" the pumps for 1 week to put their child through college. Who is to say they arent doing it? Then putting it back before the government comes to check on their yearly review?

Check for accuracy? But then they would have to hire more inspectors, thus raising taxes, and where would that money come from?? HHMMMMM???

With the amount of gas stations that have closed up in NS over the past few years, that should lighten the inspectors load a little. Regardless of whether the price of gas is up or down, everyone should be entitled to a fair measure for their money.

WillyG; You have a good point, but remember that if a guage set in your car costs the manufacturer $11 you will pay $27.

Why do readers at the Houstongasprices.com web site get subjected to articles about Canadian gas stations? I can understand why an occasional article about Mexican gas stations might be of interest to a Houstonian, but why do we get articles on Canada?

There are no inspections of many of the fast food places we all love. I don't think many of us would eat at them if we really knew the truth behind the counter and in the kitchen. Ugh!

Watch the pump when you start the gas flow. Usually 10-15 cents run off before any gas hits your tank. This has happened for years, but it hasn't made much of a difference until prices spiked. Used to be only a nickel at most.

I am not suprised to see this. It is just an other way our gov`t is ignoring the needs of those who put them in the legislature. We NEED members who serve the people not just seek to fet reelected.

I wonder how hard would it be, and how costly for the car manufacturers to build a measuring gage at the gas tank, so when you pump gas it'll tell you exactly how much you pumped in. This way if there are complaints from the motorists that a certain station is shorting-out the motorists, the Government could step in right away.

I read a report on the internet the other day that several stations in Michigan are not giving a full gallon of gas. What a rip off.

Back when I used to live in Kansas, some unscrupulous station owners place devices in some pumps to increase the "counts". In effect, it would add a few 10ths of a gallon that shouldn't otherwise have been there. The device would subtract that many pulses at 5 and 10 gallons, so the calibrations would be right on when the state inspected the pumps. At the time, 5 and 10 gallons were the standards for checking the pump. However, if you had an odd amount (like 3.7 gallons, or 8.4 gallons), the discrepency would show. I wouldn't be surprised if dishones station owners aren't still doing this...

In Nebraska they even found a few stations selling E10 in pumps marked a alcohol free, which means they can make an extra few cents per gallon.
