Without gong to the extremes of the hypermilers, it appears that we can improve our mileage by being more courteous drivers (not driving aggressively, not speeding, etc.). Seems like good ideas to me.

"In fact, Gerdes says, following just the basics, like parking so that you can pull forward rather than wasting gas backing up, will improve own your mileage 25%."

For how many instances? This seams ridiculously inflated.

Hmmmmm, maybe that much in some smaller cars, but most SUV's and Trucks I doubt it.

This is base driving advice but only a few people are following it and complain about the price of gas....

I average 43mpg and have gotten over 68 mpg highway without trying with a 92 Civic VX; they don't make them any more but should.

my 4 cylinder Honda Accord gets at least 28 miles to the gallon. I only fill up once a week and I live in the Atlanta suburbs and have to drive to Atlanta 5 days a week. Anything over 20 miles to the gallon is good enough to me.

Practicing non-aggressive driving can save you up to 31%. Now if I can just convince my wife of that.

I don't go to all these extremes (I share the road with other drivers who aren't willing to put up with this) but I am a nempimaniac and am obsessed with maximizing my gas mileage. I coast and try to time lights to avoid coming to a stop whenever possible. I do not speed and stay in the far right lane so I'm out of the way of those who want to. I always try to park so that I don't have to back up. I no longer use drive-thrus or leave my car idling. It's been worth it. I have gotten as high as 54 mpg so far. I'm working hard at trying to beat that.

getting mileage is one thing, but some of the tactics used by the hypermilers is just dangerous. my scoot gets 90mpg without the insanity of their driving.

I'm one of those who wouldn't want to try to wring out more gas.
