Los Angeles will end use of coal-fired power

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Los Angeles will eliminate the use of electricity made from coal by 2020, replacing it with power from cleaner renewable energy sources, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said.

"LADWP will deliver 40 percent renewable power, with the remainder coming from natural gas, nuclear, and large hydroelectric," said Villaraigosa.

Coal and natural gas-fired power now account for 76 percent of the electricity delivered by the LADWP. By 2020, the LADWP expects to cut its carbon emissions by up to 60 percent from 1990 levels, according to the mayor's office.

Check out this link Tax Data Virginians pay a dollar in federal taxes and get $1.51 back in aid. California on the other hand pays a dollar and gets back 78 cents. I will be crying a river for you when we all wake up and stop using your coal. We need Nuclear power right now. I'm hoping Obama and company will see it sooner rather than later.

People from places like New Jersey and Cleveland don't have room to talk about dirty air. The air in LA is not great, but if they had a per capita chart of the dirtiest cities I'd bet LA would not be at the top. I looked for charts on pollution, and Pittsburgh,PA held the top spot. I was surprised because I remember when I was young and lived very close that you could hardly breathe there. I think it is vastly improved. And Cleveland was pretty much the same as far as air quality, and what about Lake Erie? You couldn't even swim or eat the fish back then. Didn't they have a river that caught fire from all the pollution?

I hope their lungs can wait tha long.... they must get bus and truck emissions contained as well... black carbon (soot)is a life ending problem... then all we have to do is figure out what to do with Nuke waste... Oyster Creek Nj (Lacy Twp) is still leaking radioactive Trituim into ground water from an unspecified location....(though they are "containing" it... great!!! now clean it up and dispose of it!!!) Wonder what's going on @ all the nuke plants???

Looks like they buy all of their power from out of state, so they will have to have someone else build the facilities. If this doesn't happen, then they can say "I was going to do it, but it wasn't available."

Oh boy. ======================== Japan is very earthquake prone too and they get almost all their electricity from nuclear power. It can be done, just have to spend more to make the reactor core housing much stronger and more durable than in places where earthquakes aren't common. The tree huggers will protest to loud. They will simply try making Nevada provide all the electricity they need. That way Nevada will have the big carbon footprint and California will be cleaner.

This plan is overambitious. Are the people who won't have jobs the place where LA is going to get the additional cost of paying for electricity from. I hate to be negative much of the time... but try telling your boss or customers that you need a raise because of increased electric costs. This is going to cost jobs in Los Angeles.

Nuclear power produces 87% of all their electricity. They actually sell 18% to other EU nations. They have some of the lowest utility costs in Europe. Of course they embrace nuclear power and not fear it like we do in the U.S. They have the mindset that they will store/monitor the nuclear waste until at such time when new technology makes the waste inert (They don't care if it's 20 years down the road). I'm sure you will be happy with your lowre electric bills offsetting your higher heath costs.
