as for changing over, it's a start to clean up. Gotta start somewhere. As Confucious said, a journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.

Check out this link Tax Data Virginians pay a dollar in federal taxes and get $1.51 back in aid. California on the other hand pays a dollar and gets back 78 cents. I will be crying a river for you when we all wake up and stop using your coal. We need Nuclear power right now. I'm hoping Obama and company will see it sooner rather than later.

All the California bashing is tiresome. People from places like New Jersey and Cleveland don't have room to talk about dirty air. The air in LA is not great, but if they had a per capita chart of the dirtiest cities I'd bet LA would not be at the top. I looked for charts on pollution, and Pittsburgh,PA held the top spot. I was surprised because I remember when I was young and lived very close that you could hardly breathe there. I think it is vastly improved. And Cleveland was pretty much the same as far as air quality, and what about Lake Erie? You couldn't even swim or eat the fish back then. Didn't they have a river that caught fire from all the pollution?

This IS a great idea.. I hope their lungs can wait tha long....
they must get bus and truck emissions contained as well...
black carbon (soot)is a life ending problem...
then all we have to do is figure out what to do with Nuke waste...
Oyster Creek Nj (Lacy Twp) is still leaking radioactive Trituim into ground water from an unspecified location....(though they are "containing" it... great!!! now clean it up and dispose of it!!!)
Wonder what's going on @ all the nuke plants???

How in the world are Californian's going to pay for this? I guess the rest of the country will be paying for Californian's to get their electric power by means other than by coal and natural gas-fired power. I'm sure President Obama didn't mean to raise our taxes or did he? He's finding new ways every day to raise our taxes by passing health care, financial and automobile bailoutgs, etc...not a day goes by that he hasn't come up with a new way of raising our taxes.

Easy enough to make the statement, but where are they going to get 40% of their power from renewable sources? Looks like they buy all of their power from out of state, so they will have to have someone else build the facilities. If this doesn't happen, then they can say "I was going to do it, but it wasn't available."

Nuclear in earthquake prone California? Oh boy.
======================== Japan is very earthquake prone too and they get almost all their electricity from nuclear power.
It can be done, just have to spend more to make the reactor core housing much stronger and more durable than in places where earthquakes aren't common.

Why does LA think coal was used in the first place. My conjecture is that it was cheaper, so here goes more money out of the consumers pockets.

California will not use nuclear power as a replacement for coal. The tree huggers will protest to loud. They will simply try making Nevada provide all the electricity they need. That way Nevada will have the big carbon footprint and California will be cleaner.

2020 is not very far away. This plan is overambitious. Are the people who won't have jobs the place where LA is going to get the additional cost of paying for electricity from. I hate to be negative much of the time... but try telling your boss or customers that you need a raise because of increased electric costs. This is going to cost jobs in Los Angeles.

CUBBUC from Florida...
WOW! You really have a hard++ for the State and people of CA! Think you could ratchet that back a notch Dude?
Remember, it is their State and their decisions which only may work for them. You don't live there, and You aren't paying for it...so cool your jets!
Seems like eliminating Coal sourced electricity maybe an excellent move if we and CA are ever going to wean ourselves off of fossil fuels. Have you bought stock in Coal Mines?

Should have done what France did back in the 70's after the Oil Embargo: Build Nuclear power plants, they built 56. Nuclear power produces 87% of all their electricity. They actually sell 18% to other EU nations. They have some of the lowest utility costs in Europe. Of course they embrace nuclear power and not fear it like we do in the U.S. They have the mindset that they will store/monitor the nuclear waste until at such time when new technology makes the waste inert (They don't care if it's 20 years down the road). Wow! what a novel idea!! Clean energy at a low price!!
Should have done it back in the 70's
What's sad about it, they used our nuclear technology!!

Great! Who's paying for it? Last I heard California was a week away from bankruptcy. Is it a federal project that I and everyone else in the other 49 states will have to pay for to reinforce California's inability to properly manage their budget?

Those of you who support "Clean Coal" should volunteer to take the byproduct "Fly Ash" a known carcinogen and spread it in your yards for your children to play in, and live near enough to the plants to get daily doses of the acid fumes produced. I'm sure you will be happy with your lowre electric bills offsetting your higher heath costs.
