Natural Gas Pipelines to Expand U.S. Supply Glut: Energy Markets

Bloomberg -- Natural gas pipelines coming into service by year end may boost deliveries from the Marcellus shale deposit in the U.S. Northeast by 30 percent, extending a supply glut that helped send prices to decade lows.

As much as 2 billion cubic feet of gas a day are set to flow from the lines in Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, bound for markets along the Eastern Seaboard, based on government and pipeline-company projections. About 1,000 Marcellus shale wells sit uncompleted, mainly because of a lack of pipeline infrastructure, according to the Energy Department.

“There are new pipelines coming up and more Marcellus gas is going to flood storage going into winter,” Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at Price Futures Group in Chicago, said in a phone interview. “Unless you get a really co

Just a comment on those posters who are experiencing high electrical rates...if available get a Smart Meter. If you are diligent, you can use Off-Peak Hours, here it is before 2pm and after 7pm weekdays. The cost of electricity is a little over 2 cents Off-Peak and I can check usage on the Internet day or night. Well worth it!

Natural gas is great for fleets of vehicles. But they are not so great for personal vehicles. Maybe it's is different in other places, but I have never seen a station that sold natural gas.

That's a major problem, @heydano67. Natural gas is MUCH harder to store than oil. It takes a lot of pressure which also requires energy and it has a tendency to leak out when under pressure.

It's not so easy, @knot2swift. Spectra Energy is already trying to build a huge gas line to Manhattan but you don't understand how much energy is truly needed. Just about every building in New York is heated by furnaces fueled by #2 or #6 heavy oil. You would need a gas line big enough to drive a truck through to supply enough natural gas if every building switched to gas heat.

As it is, natural gas powerplants in New York need to keep oil in storage tanks onsite, in order to switch fuels when natural gas pressure is low during peak demand.

Really, @suzmar? Once all the natural gas has been sucked out of the ground and burned, then what? Wind and solar energy doesn't run out.

Save the natural gas for night, cloudy days, and whenever the wind doesn't blow.

We'll only have a glut until we sell the world on natural gas. After that we'll be selling natural gas TO the world.

I don't think it will help lower your gas prices, as most cars does not run on natural gas. HAHA

So when are the natural gas prices and electricity cost (that generated by using natural gas) going to come down for the consumer?

sounds like prices should be low again this year, or will gas companies not pass the price breaks to consumers?
