For those complaining about the cost:
Like most military research, this isn't for civilian use.
Yet.
This is to give the Navy a more secure and reliable fuel supply, so they don't have to depend so much on foreign ports and long lines of supply. Cost is secondary.

Navy turns sea water into jet fuel? If they can extract CO2 dissolved in seawater and produce cheaper hydrogen and JP5, then do so. The ocean is very large and that potential fuel source would be limitless. Whatever the size or shape of the vehicle, Produce and ‘Drive’ vehicles with high MPG, are very safe, reliable, have a ‘reasonable’ cost and a good ‘value’ for the money. The price of fuel at the pump is too high! 12/22/2012!

What is the cost of oil based jet fuel? Could the process go commercial and ease the use of oil for jet fuel?

... recovered CO2 and produced hydrogen using an electrochemical acidification cell, and converted it to hydrocarbons BS chemistry wise
they could produce hydrogen from seawater; all the seamens' breath and jet exhaust would produce adequate CO2 ;-)

A LITTLE misleading? They have done it in a lab, not on a ship, so at this point it is physically possible, however practical or impractical it is. Headline implies planes are already aloft from the ship's chemistry experiment.

Good for you Navy. Nuclear power to stay under way. Desalinization to get drinking and make-up water and now jet fuel from sea water. All that's left is trolling for fish and growing oranges (against scurvy) in a hydroponic garden. Carriers would only ports of call for liberty.

No, @carpenter4u. It's the President's way to cut a very long and very vulnerable supply chain for the Navy.
Can't launch planes without fuel and tankers are very soft targets.

Waitaminute. There's no such thing as a free lunch. Where is the Navy getting the energy to convert seawater to jet fuel? From nuclear power?

If this works, and this is a big IF and We can keep the process secret the Navy has just solved all our economic problems. The Arabs can blow themselves or each other up and it wouldn't hinder world fuel supply.
