Should Chevy Corvette have 2 versions?

Detroit Free Press -- As sure as the sun rises and God makes little green apples, there will always be a Chevrolet Corvette.

Exactly what the next generation of America's most revered sports car will bring is the topic of intense study within General Motors, however.

The Corvette is arguably the world's best sports car. It has looks that would make Ferrari proud, performance to match Porsche, and a price that undercuts both by tens of thousands of dollars.

It also has countless fanatical admirers and a devoted owner base built up over decades.

This is not a formula an automaker messes with lightly.

However, there's a school of thought within GM that the next Corvette - which probably won't hit the road for at least three to four years - must break the mold.

Chevrolet finds itself on the horn..

Chevy has the Camaro which you can get with the Corvette engine, great suspension, and world class styling for half the cost of the Corvette. This gives the consumer the choice.

GM has one world class car and now they want to mess with that one! The management has changed, but not any better!

The retro-styled new Mustangs, Camaros and Challengers were just the move to breath fire back into those aging nameplates. However I think Corvettes appeal to a different set of buyers, who have money and want a car that reflects their lifestyle and personality. "The best car money can buy", as the saying goes. So the car should look exceptionally sleek, powerful and modern, and in no way look "economy".

Well stated simply and to the point. The C7 or Seventh Generation Corvette, likely will be something that will break the mold. They may be working on an Electical Version to compete against the Tesla. I would do that, because the Tesla Sport Coupe is built with competing the Performance car industry. They likely will continue to build the Naturally aspirated engines of today, but may lighten them and make them more compact. It will be interesting. I don't see a 7th generation coming out for at least 7 or 8 more years, however. With that kind of time, they should be able to build an Electric car to compete with the Tesla model mentioned above.

Well, Bush-43 made our bed on this one by handing TARP money to GM.

Well, closing or selling four brands is supposed to make things leaner, whether it is better or not depends on how the market reacts.

It would be disastrous right now for the US Treasury to get out of Government Motors. They should wait for a return to profit and that way the company would be worth something when the Treasury sells off its stock holdings.

I once owned a tin-can Datsun that would get to more than 30 MPH on the highway. I'm not sure, but I think the speed limit back then was 55.

As a huge fan of the vette, I seem to recall that THREE versions of the car are now made - the base model, the ZO6, and the ZR1. The ZR1 well into the six figures and performance wise, will rival any exotic out there.

I think they are messing with a good thing. Not to sure this is a good idea. But it won't be the first mistake that GM has made. Or the last.

The Government should get out of GM asap. Let the bankruptcy go forward and then GM can be a leaner and better company with a future. I own a Corvette and it gets 30 mph on the highway while being comfortable and stylish. They are very affordable to the average person, just buy them used as I did. Right now you can get a great new Corvette for $50k to $110K depending on what performance you need and want. There are good options for the consumer to choose. Let the market dictate what to produce, not a Government official.

The question is should we need Corvettes at all?

NO! Corvette is the name of an American Sports Car! Chevy could use the body tech and smaller engine on a new named car, but not Corvette!

This is why GM is such a failure. They just can't leave well enough alone. The Corvette is the only decent car coming out of the GM barn, and now they're going to ruin that too. They DESERVE to fail.

If the wife ever allowed me the luxury of the car of my dreams it would be the current vette. I CANNOT imagine improving on the classic model unless it were to offer another of lower horsepower to those who have little self control over the urge to eat tickets as they soar to their possible marriage with the hind end of a semi somewhere down the passing lane.

I def don't think they should produce 2 versions. Making Corvettes more available will in turn make them less desirable.

Fordmexico has the right plan. Leave it alone! Every time a company has tried to create an econo-version of a high end sports car for the masses it has failed and has only served to defame the original nameplate. Leave the Corvette alone.
It is a classic just by name recognition alone, even production were to stop today!

The market may be demanding the split are GM executives have noticed. One model that is in the $35k stripped to $55k loaded range and one model in the $75k+ range. Maybe the versions instead of models would be the appropriate description.

If you want to think really different, how about a hybrid for the low end which gives good performance. This would have a V6 or some bigger engine combines with batteries to give good off the line performance and acceleration to slightly better the offerings of others. The high end version would be gasoline only and would compete with the top prestige nameplates in performance and undercut the price by $10k to $20k. The latter produces a good profit margin while the former meets the image and sacrifices a little performance. Maybe the hybrid used super capacitors and not batteries.

It's a different way to think about a vehicle and might work. Or might not.
