Detroit has always been slow or last to respond to the markets needs and desires. They have always been first in producing gas guzzlers and by the way the most profitable vehicles and are forced to make improvements as they kick, scream and go to the feds for every nickel they can get their hands on.

I want a car that is inexpensive, safe, reliable, 35+MPG, good access and room inside, easy to repair and maintain, automatic transmission, inexpensive to insure, able to tow a few thousand pounds. So far I have only found one nearing all those qualities and it's foreign.

I have seen a slight increase in MPG in newer vehicles, but not much to speak of.

GM has been notorious for building only guzzling high profit margin hulks. No wonder they went bankrupt.

There are some 40+mpg vehicles out there but you really can't haul the family around on vacation with them

They are finally on the right side of this issue...ussually in the past they have been pushing gas-guzzling SUVs.

Good for them. If you look at the chart of Average US Gas prices for the last 8 years, you'll see that gas prices have run up every spring to go down by a smaller amount every fall. The exception to that was the economic collapse during the late Bush second term when prices went from $2.90 in Jan 20008 to $4.12 in July to $1.61 before climbing back up to $2.61 the following June.

We are just treading water with mpg increases and gas prices rising. Alternative fuels will be coming sooner as gas prices rise.

When the gov't increases the mpg on vehicles the gas prices go up by the same margin!

Yeah, better gas mileage by reducing size and weight, removing the spare tire, and making it ever easier to die in. Just keep your old car and maintain it well.

LOOK GAS has it wrong - if gas hits $10/gal for 11/6 he doesn't get reelected. If he gets reelected and it hits before the Nov 14 elections, he gets a veto proof Congress, who will proceed to undo everything he had done in the previous 6 years - so no he doesn't want $10/gal gas.

The most economical solution is to keep and maintain the vehicle you already own.

Just remember that "foreign" carmakers employ a lot of Americans and pay a lot of taxes to the federal, state, and local governments.

Once again... based on average fuel economy and the consumer price index, your commute in 1973 was costing you the equivalent of $6 per gallon today.

They have to try to get better gas mileage for the government mandate, and then work out how to offset government regulations that reduce gas mileage. Who'd have a politician for a master?
