Cheap gas could cause part of it but as others have pointed out higher unemployment means less people commuting overall so less people on buses too.

There are actually people out there who think $4/gal gas is a good thing to force mass transit ridership. Of course if you ask them about the economy or areas where mass transit isn't feasible you get the deer in the headlights look.

My main reason for not using mass transit is that I have a 20 minute drive to work. To take the Via bus, it would take nearly two hours! That is so incredibly inefficient...
